So firstly, just a quick general update on the beginning of this week...
As I mentioned previously, I went to the city of Naranjo on Sunday to meet the family of my host mom. She is one of 6 kids, most of whom were there along with their own spouses and children. SO. MANY. TICOS. It was definitely pretty intimidating, as very few of them spoke any English, or at least Spanish that was slow enough for me to fully comprehend. Nonetheless, they were very lovely people. They fed me wayyy to much food, of course, and when they decided to watch a movie they put it in English with Spanish subtitles so that I could understand it. Ticos are such generous, accommodating people that their mentality was kind of a shock in comparison to most Americans. When my host mom told her family that I had been out late the night before with mis amigas, they offered me a bed if I wanted to nap. Adorable.
As for Monday until today, I have started my classes at the Monteverde Institute. This semester I will be taking Spanish, Tropical Ecology, Environmental Sustainability, and Social Development and Change in Costa Rica. It should be awesome, especially since every Friday we will be taking field trips around the area to actually see what we are learning about. For example, this week our trip is to a local coffee plantation.
Alas, here are some pics of my house in nearby Santa Elena, about an hour's walk from the institute. And yes, the walk is completely uphill.
My bed/room, which actually belongs to María Paula, my little host sister. She doesn't seem bothered at all that she had to give up her room for me. Again, Ticos are so accommodating!
The other side of my room. I swear my stuff is more organized now...
The kitchen. The kitchen, living room, and dining room are all part of the same main room, with all 3 bedrooms and the bathroom of of this.
The living room. My room is the one to the left. My host mom would like everyone to know that the deer/cow heads are her husband's, and she thinks that they are ugly.
